VERONA, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey man has been arrested after police say he hit and killed a pedestrian before leaving the scene last month.

Authorities said Wednesday 44-year-old Jose Asencio has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death in the crash that killed 59-year-old Matthew BeneduceMcGrath.

Police say BeneduceMcGrath was struck and killed while crossing a Verona street on June 24. Authorities say surveillance video identified a van driven by Asencio as the vehicle that struck the victim.

The Newark man is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 bail.

It’s unclear if he has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
