HADLEY, Mass. (AP) - The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection says a contractor from Hadley is responsible for illegally dumping concrete near the Connecticut River and must clean it up.

The Republican newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/29SioIi ) the state issued a unilateral administrative order Thursday to Christopher Baj of Hadley Concrete Services after an investigation, which also involved the Hadley Police Department and Massachusetts Environmental Police.

Authorities say about 2,860 cubic feet of concrete rubble was found on private property near the river in May. The investigation determined it came from a sidewalk construction project at a building in Northampton.

Baj, reached by The Associated Press on his cell phone Thursday, said his company had nothing to do with the dumping and had hired a subcontractor to do that work.
