HOUSTON (AP) - A 27-year-old Houston man has been charged with murder for the death this week of a police officer killed when he crashed his motorcycle while pursuing two shoplifting suspects in a car.
Houston police said Thursday that Dante Moore has told detectives he was the driver of the car that was fleeing from 52-year-old Bellaire Police Officer Anthony Marco Zarate on Tuesday. Bellaire is an enclave of Houston.
Zarate was chasing men suspected of stealing from a Target store when he lost control and crashed into a lawn maintenance trailer parked on a street.
Moore, accompanied by a community activist, surrendered to Bellaire police on Wednesday. He’s jailed on $100,000 bond.
Jail records did not immediately list an attorney for him.
