KINDER, La. (AP) - About 80 employees of the Allen Correctional Center will be laid off due to state budget cuts. That’s according to a spokesman for prison operator GEO Group.

Pablo Paez, company vice president, said in an email to the American Press (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb) GEO will begin operating Allen Correctional as a jail facility on Aug. 1.

Paez says GEO and the Louisiana Department of Corrections are working closely to implement the changes in order to ensure that public safety is maintained throughout the process.

Rep. Dorothy Sue Hill, who represents Allen Parish, said an alternative to cutting employees would have been closing the facility and losing all 351 employees.

The prison is located just north of Kinder.

Warden Keith Cooley says the prison houses over 1,530 adult male offenders at minimum, medium and maximum custody levels.
