PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A federal jury has convicted a Letcher man of illegally killing a bald eagle.

Authorities say 69-year-old Ted Nelson last year injected a poison into the carcasses of cows to kill predators including coyotes, using a pesticide that can’t legally be used for baiting.

U.S. Attorney Randolph Seiler says an eagle ate the carcasses of coyotes that had been poisoned, and died.

A jury in Sioux Falls recently convicted Nelson of unlawfully killing a bald eagle and unlawfully using a pesticide. He could face more than a year in prison and a $26,000 fine. A sentencing date was not immediately set.
