PEMBROKE, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 22-year-old man celebrating his birthday with friends at a western New York waterfall has drowned.

Troopers say they responded around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to an emergency at Indian Falls on Tonawanda Creek in the Genesee County town of Pembroke, 25 miles east of Buffalo.

Police say Bradley Agustin of Buffalo was swimming with friends while celebrating his birthday. Troopers say Augustin had jumped into the water and didn’t surface.

His friends and others at the popular swimming spot found him near the base of the falls and pulled him from the water. Troopers say life-saving techniques were administered but Augustin didn’t respond.

Police say an autopsy is being done to determine the cause of death.

Local emergency officials say they conduct several rescues at the falls each summer.
