PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A Virginia state senator is organizing a peace vigil in Portsmouth in the wake of the fatal shooting of five police officers in Dallas.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/29zgfxb ) that State Sen. Louise Lucas is planning a “Prayer for Peace in Portsmouth” vigil on Saturday. It will be held at I.C. Norcom High School at 5 p.m.

Lucas says NAACP leaders and police from Portsmouth are among those she is inviting to speak at the event.

Five officers were killed and several others were wounded in Dallas last week during a demonstration over recent police shootings of black men.

It was the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
