Victoria Beckham unintentionally sparked controversy over the weekend after she posted a photo of herself kissing her 5-year-old daughter on the lips.

“Happy Birthday baby girl … We all love you so much … kisses from mummy X,” Ms. Beckham, wife of former soccer legend David Beckham, wrote on Instagram Sunday.

The photo, which currently has more than 8,000 comments, drew criticism from people who deemed a mouth kiss with a child “disgusting” and “inappropriate.”

Others supported Ms. Beckham by posting photos of themselves kissing their children on the lips with the hashtag #KissYourKids.

“What the heck is up with the outrage going on about a picture of @victoriabeckham kissing her daughter on the lips?” wrote user @ciarafoynutrition, accompanied by a photo of her kissing her daughter. “Somebody explain to me why that’s a problem!? Children are innocent, they do what comes naturally. If I don’t kiss my daughter on the lips, she literally grabs my face….case in point.”

“WTF is wrong with this picture? NOTHING! That’s right, nothing. And if you disagree, then YOU’RE the problem,” wrote user @jaymeeong, with her own #KissYourKids photo.

Mrs. Beckham has yet to comment on the matter publicly.
