DETROIT (AP) - Wayne State University’s campus police department will celebrate 50 years as a recognized law enforcement agency.

A ceremony is scheduled Friday at the school’s campus in Detroit’s Midtown area. The program includes a swearing-in of three new officers.

The school says the department was formed in 1966. Its coverage area extends outside of the campus to the surrounding neighborhood.

Officers are fully licensed through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and sworn peace officers commissioned under state law. They also are commissioned as Detroit police officers.
