LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Authorities say a Lexington man drowned while swimming in a tributary of the Kentucky River.

Garrard County Coroner Daryl Hodge told the Lexington Herald-Leader (https://bit.ly/29TIrjD ) that 42-year-old Charles Martin was pronounced dead Wednesday evening after he was pulled from the water near the community of Buckeye.

Hodge says Martin and three other people were at the spot where Kentucky 39 ends at the confluence of the river and Paint Lick Creek. The coroner says Martin and a woman were swimming, and two non-swimmers remained on land.

Hodge says Martin was swimming across the creek when he “started hollering for help.” He says a companion was able to bring him back to shore.

The coroner says an autopsy Thursday at the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort confirmed that Martin drowned.
