SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers has turned down a chance to give a prime-time speech during next week’s Republican National Convention, and is skipping the gathering in Cleveland.

McMorris Rodgers ranks No. 4 in the hierarchy of the House of Representatives.

The Spokesman-Review reports that she decided to head to Washington state instead of Cleveland next week.

McMorris Rodgers will attend a memorial service for a colleague in Olympia on Monday and campaign in her Eastern Washington district, where she faces four challengers in the Aug. 2 primary.

McMorris Rodgers was a Washington delegate to the 2008 Republican National Convention. She was an early supporter of 2012 nominee Mitt Romney and spoke during that convention.
