CLEVELAND (AP) - A 27-year-old man who shot at and wounded a 13-year-old boy in Cleveland has been sentenced to the maximum 20 years in prison.

The Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County Prosecutor’s Office says Jovan Hayes was sentenced Thursday for shooting the boy last September. A jury last month convicted him of attempted murder and other charges.

Police say that one day after Hayes was released from probation on an unrelated charge, he shot at the boy seven times, hitting him in the shoulder. The boy was standing feet away from a woman related to a victim in a 2013 shooting death where Hayes was charged with murder. Charges in that case eventually were dropped.

The victim and the woman testified against Hayes at trial.
