BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - The man who died in a paragliding accident in Skagit County this week was a longtime Western Washington University professor who recently retired.

Skagit County Coroner Hayley Thompson says 64-year-old Thomas J. “TJ” Olney died in Wednesday’s accident near Samish Overlook on Blanchard Mountain.

The Bellingham Herald reports that (https://goo.gl/fOdqtV ) Olney, an experienced glider, had been gliding with a group of people when he took off from the overlook’s launch area around 3 p.m. Authorities say his glider’s sail collapsed and he fell to the ground.

A WWU dean says Olney had been an associate professor of marketing at Western for the last 30 years before retiring last month. Craig Dunn, dean of the College of Business and Economics, says he was highly regarded by students and fellow colleagues.
