MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a man is hospitalized after being shot by police following a chase across much of the Phoenix area.

Mesa police say the suspect fired at officers during the chase, that officers returned fire and that he was shot and stunned before being taken into custody in Goodyear on the metro area’s west side.

Sgt. Diana Williams says the 48-year-old suspect’s identity is being withheld until he is released from the hospital, which is expected in several days.

Williams says the incident began in Mesa when the man shot a gun while in a vehicle. A police lieutenant was nearby and officers attempted to stop the vehicle.

According to Williams, that led to a chase through Tempe and Phoenix and into Goodyear where police succeeded in halting the vehicle.
