SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - The Spearfish City Council will consider an ordinance that would make it a misdemeanor to endanger a pet by leaving it unattended in a hot vehicle.

The Black Hills Pioneer reports (https://bit.ly/29O2YEt ) the proposal that the council is to discuss Monday would make violations punishable by a $200 fine.

Officials say the only option now for prosecutors is to charge a pet owner with animal cruelty or neglect, a harsher charge that might not fight the crime and is more difficult to prosecute.

City legal intern Cole Gustafson says creating a misdemeanor would make it easier to deal with such cases.
