SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Former Utah Speaker of the House Melvin Brown is asking for an election recount after losing a Republican primary race to Morgan County Commissioner Logan Wilde by eight votes.

Brown told Deseret News (https://bit.ly/29HOxy0 ) that the election results certified this week are so close that a recount “deserves to be done.”

He can’t ask for a recount until the state elections office conducts an official canvass on July 26.

Brown is a former Utah Speaker of the House who served from 1987 to 2000 and was re-elected to the statehouse in 2007.

Wilde says he’s confident he’ll remain the winner after the recount and is focusing on running against Democrat Cole Capener in the general election.
