BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana residents found more than $412,000 in unclaimed property by searching the state Department of the Treasury’s database during an event held in suburban New Orleans over the weekend.

State Treasurer John Kennedy, in a news release Monday, said the department is holding nearly $750 million in unclaimed property and wants to return it to its rightful owners. Since 1972, the program has returned more than $407 million to almost 630,000 Louisiana residents.

A few times a year, department employees go to shopping malls to increase awareness about the program. At Saturday’s event at Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie, the department says one man found nearly $12,000.

Residents who could not attend are encouraged to search for missing money online at www.LATreasury.com or call the department’s toll-free hotline at 1-888-925-4127.
