SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - A homeless man has been convicted of killing a Tampa Bay area woman who went missing 13 years ago.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune (https://goo.gl/BtQwhW) reports that 53-year-old John Alan Mellquist was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder. He faces a possible life sentence at an Aug. 29 hearing.

Prosecutors say Mellquist was renting a room in 69-year-old Annelise Schweickardt’s home when he killed in her April 2003. The woman was reported missing, and Mellquist gave differing accounts of where she might be. Authorities also learned that Mellquist forged and cashed checks from Schweickardt’s bank account and used her vehicle after she had disappeared.

Investigators found blood and evidence of a cleanup in Schweickardt’s home, but her body was never recovered.
