MIDDLEOWN, R.I. (AP) - Middletown has taken another step toward banning single-use plastic shopping bags.

The Newport Daily News (https://bit.ly/29RK77A ) reports that the Town Council voted unanimously Monday night to direct town lawyer Peter Regan to draft an ordinance that would ban retail stores from using the bags.

Regan was asked to report back with his recommendations, which would have to be vetted and approved by the council after multiple public hearings.

Town officials said the goal of the effort is to get rid of the bags and help the environment.

It’s not the first time the council has weighed a ban on the bags. In May 2012, the Rhode Island chapter of the Surfrider Foundation asked the town to consider a ban. At that meeting, the council took no action on the matter.
