GREAT RIVER, N.Y. (AP) - Officials have rescued a windsurfer who got knocked off his board by high winds and waves as storms rolled through Long Island’s south shore.

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued 56-year-old Donald Roth Monday evening from the Great South Bay off Heckscher State Park in Great River.

A witness on shore saw Roth, of Washing Township, New Jersey, get knocked off his board and called 911.

Marine Bureau officers and Coast Guard members responded. Officers found Roth clinging to his board and sail with only his head above water. He was wearing a wetsuit and a helmet, but no life jacket.

Roth was not injured and did not require medical attention.

Officials are reminding anyone heading out on the water to wear a life jacket and check the weather ahead of time.
