ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says he’s seeking $18 million in federal transportation funding to upgrade the Port of Albany.

The New York Democrat on Monday said the money would allow the port to demolish and rebuild a warehouse, rebuild a shipping terminal and improve safety at the port, which he says is the busiest facility of its kind in upstate New York.

Schumer says upgrading the port will expand export opportunities for regional manufacturers, including those who make technology equipment too large to be shipped by road or rail.

The Port of Albany generates an estimated $800 million in economic output annually.
