MONKTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Gas Systems Inc. has withdrawn its application for a permit to transplant about 700 plants considered rare by the state away from the path of a natural gas pipeline.

The company had wanted to transplant the harsh sunflowers located between Cedar Lane and Hollow Road on a property in Monkton that it recently purchased. The state’s Fish and Wildlife guide says the flower isn’t rare nationally, but is considered threatened or rare by the state.

Vermont Gas officials say they withdrew the request after deciding to use a horizontal directional drill under the plants on the property.

The pipeline will extend 41 miles between Colchester and Addison County and is now under construction.

A public hearing planned for July 28 in Montpelier has been canceled.
