BEAVER, Pa. (AP) - Nurses at the Heritage Valley Beaver hospital in western Pennsylvania have gone on strike over a contract impasse.

The hospital’s 500 nurses say they’ll strike for Tuesday only after negotiations earlier this month failed to yield a new contract.

The Service Employees International Union Healthcare Pennsylvania union is upset because the hospital wants to raise health care premiums for nurses by 50 percent and exclude spouses from coverage. Similar moves by companies have been spurred by changes that are part of the federal Affordable Care Act.

A hospital spokesman says officials are disappointed and say their contract offer is fair, while the union contends the premium hikes are beyond what’s necessary to pass on the act’s costs to the union.

A union rally was also planned Tuesday.
