ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - A 21-year-old woman is in critical condition after authorities say she was rescued out of the water near a jetty in Atlantic City.

Fire Chief Scott Evans tells the Press of Atlantic City (https://bit.ly/2a6FwEJ ) emergency crews received a report of a woman drowning at the Rhode Island Avenue beach at about 6:10 p.m. Monday.

He says rescue teams were deployed on jet skis and found the woman unconscious after 10 minutes of searching. Officials say crews brought her to shore and performed CPR before she was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Evans says the woman’s sister broke her leg when she ran on the jetty to look for the victim.

He says lifeguards went off duty at 6 p.m. and the beach was unguarded at the time of the incident.
