PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island woman has been sentenced to prison for her role in the beating death of her 6-year-old son.

Attorney General Perter Kilmartin says 33-year-old Trisha Oliver, of West Warwick, was sentenced Tuesday in Providence Superior Court to eight years and nine months behind bars.

Oliver pleaded guilty to manslaughter on May 9.

Oliver’s ex-boyfriend, Michael Patino, is serving a life sentence after a jury found him guilty in April 2015 of second-degree murder in the 2009 killing of Marco Nieves.

Authorities say Oliver failed to take Marco to the hospital after Patino punched the boy so hard his intestine tore. Marco suffered for more than 12 hours before Oliver called 911.

Prosecutors have said Marco may have survived had he received medical treatment sooner.
