ASHEBORO, N.C. (AP) - Police say a man was arrested after leaving his two young children in a car that wasn’t running while he went to the bank in Asheboro.

Authorities told news outlets that the children may have been in the car with the windows cracked for about 90 minutes. The children were sweating and crying when police took them out of the vehicle.

Investigators say Jose Martinez told them he was going to the bank and it took longer than he expected. He has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse and assault.

Police say the mother picked up the children after they were checked by paramedics.

It wasn’t known if Martinez had a lawyer.
