PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A charitable foundation is giving out $1 million to dozens of nonprofit organizations throughout Maine, with a focus on helping the state’s most vulnerable residents.

The John T. Gorman Foundation says it will give out 60 grants to a range of organizations, including groups that provide services like housing, food and crisis support.

The foundation is also giving money to groups that provide services to cancer victims and people with mental health issues. Those groups have typically been the focus of the grant effort, which is called the Direct Services Grant Program.

The grants range from $5,000 to $25,000. Recipients include the American Cancer Society, Mid-Coast Hunger Prevention Program and The Center for Wisdom’s Women.
