BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - The Brattleboro Housing Authority has been awarded a grant totaling $138,000 through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Family Self-Sufficiency Program.

The Reformer reports (https://bit.ly/29UbrZi ) Brattleboro was one of three housing authorities in Vermont to receive the grant.

BHA Executive Director Christine Hart says the federal program is oriented around helping residents in public housing obtain the necessary tools to find work in the field that they’re interested in.

An increase in income for residents yields a higher rent. Through the program, that rent increase instead is placed into an escrow account that the participant will have access to once their reach their goals.

The grant will help fund two coordinators, who will work with residents to find good jobs and maintain their employment.
