PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) - Two men are in custody in the early-morning shooting death of a girl on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Oglala Sioux Tribe spokesman Kevin Steele says the girl was walking on a sidewalk with a friend in the reservation’s community of Pine Ridge when she was shot. He says it is unclear why the girl was shot.

Steele says the shooting happened in the community’s main street, where homes and businesses are located.

Tribal police and federal authorities are investigating. An FBI spokesman says the agency is aware of a shooting in the community but would not provide any details.

Oglala Sioux Tribe Police Chief Eugenio B. White Hawk didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.
