BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police say a man accused of killing his stepfather outside the family’s Birmingham home has been charged with murder after he initially blamed two robbers in the stabbing death.

Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards tells local news media Wednesday that 32-year-old Reginald Mott is charged in the death of Tyrone Taylor. The 49-year-old Taylor was found stabbed to death July 1.

Homicide Sgt. John Tanks says Mott told investigators he saw Taylor in a physical altercation outside their home. Mott said two suspects fled the scene where Taylor was unresponsive.

Edwards says further investigation suggests that Mott fabricated the story. Edwards says the struggle occurred between Taylor and Mott.

Mott is being held at the Jefferson County Jail on a $120,000 bond. It’s unclear if Mott has an attorney.
