CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A 37-year-old Texas man escaped serious injury when his pickup collided with a freight train at a New Mexico crossing after the man saw the approaching train but didn’t stop in time.

Jacob Harper of Uvalde, Texas, told the Clovis News Journal (https://goo.gl/SvkIeV ) that he’d seen the train “way back” but didn’t see any signals activate to tell him he should stop.

The ungated crossing has “railroad crossing” signs on both sides.

Harper says it was too late to avoid the collision Tuesday before he slammed on the brakes.

Harper’s heavily damaged truck was left on its side after the collision, and Harper says the accident left him sore and “hurting a little bit.”

He says he was heading home to the San Antonio area when the crash occurred.
