CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. (AP) - In a story July 20 about a new corral for the Chincoteague ponies, The Associated Press reported erroneously when the ponies’ annual swim would take place. The swim is scheduled for July 27, not July 23.

A corrected version of the story is below:

New corral ready for 2016 Chincoteague pony roundup

A new corral awaits the Chincoteague ponies for their roundup from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. (AP) - A new corral awaits the Chincoteague ponies for their southern herd roundup before the annual swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island.

Kevin Sloan, refuge manager of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, tells The Daily Times of Salisbury (https://delmarvane.ws/29MEhJS) that the old corral was in disrepair and located on a creek bank.

And a recent infestation of southern pine beetles on Assateague meant trees had to be cut down because of the damage. So, the corral could be built without cutting down living trees.

This year’s pony swim is set for Wednesday, July 27.
