WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Hospital officials say Wilmington and northern New Castle County residents will have access to faster, more convenient trauma care after announcing that Saint Francis Healthcare in Wilimington will start handling more serious trauma patients.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports (https://delonline.us/2ag9mGo) officials said Tuesday that Saint Francis’ new designation as a conditional Level 3 trauma center began on Monday.

This means the 25-bed emergency room can now treat patients “stable trauma patients,” including those with wounds to the extremities, stab wounds and bone fractures.

Previously, Saint Francis could treat trauma patients with minor injuries but transferred those seriously injured to other facilities.

To be recommended for full Level 3 designation, Saint Francis must submit to an American College of Surgeons site visit over the next year.
