NORTH MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island say a pedestrian was injured when a police vehicle responding to a fatal fire was involved in a chain-reaction crash.

Nassau County Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun says one person died in the fire that happened in a house in North Massapequa (mas-uh-PEEK’-wuh) at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately determined.

LeBrun says a patrol unit heading to the fire was involved in a collision about a mile away. The police vehicle collided with a car, and that car then struck a male pedestrian.

The pedestrian was hospitalized with “very serious” injuries and was in critical condition.

Two police officers and the driver of the other car also were hospitalized in stable condition.

Nine departments responded to the house fire.
