NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Two south Louisiana nurses have pleaded guilty to health care fraud.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite says 31-year-old Erica Edwards, of New Orleans and 43-year-old Jeff Koon, of Lockport, entered their pleas Wednesday.

On April 21, Polite says Edwards and Koon were charged along with 12 other defendants in a 31-count superseding indictment charging approximately $30.2 million in Medicare fraud.

He says the two RNs assessed the status of their patients, initiating a plan of care, evaluating patient needs, providing comprehensive nursing care, among other things.

Polite says Koon and Edwards pleaded guilty to fraudulently recertifying patients for home health by recording false changes in medications and exacerbations in medication conditions that did not occur and falsely documented that patients were homebound.

U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan set sentencing for Feb. 1.
