NORTHPORT, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a house fire in Northport has claimed the life of one person.

Northport fire Capt. Jason Norris says fire crews were called to the home Wednesday afternoon and found heavy fire when they arrived.

Norris says the victim - whose identity wasn’t immediately released - was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. Norris said one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

The Tuscaloosa News reports (https://bit.ly/29PU4Ug) that Northport Fire Rescue and the Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

The newspaper reports that it’s the first fire-related death in Tuscaloosa County this year. The state fire marshal’s office says there have been 56 fire deaths statewide this year.
