JASPER, Ark. (AP) - A man recently arrested for battery has escaped the Newton County jail in Jasper.

Sheriff’s officials told reporters that 31-year-old Ryan Campbell escaped between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday by climbing over both a chain-link fence and barbed wire.

Campbell was arrested July 11 for allegedly beating a man and leaving the man hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities say it isn’t known whether Campbell is armed, but that he should be considered dangerous.

Arkansas State Police, Harrison Police, National Park Service officials, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officers and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office are assisting Newton County officials in the search.
