GRETNA, La. (AP) - A state judge says a 27-year-old man who fatally shot his girlfriend on a Metairie street in 2013 did not murder the woman because he was insane at the time.

The New Orleans Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/2adrgtG) Judge Scott Schlegel ruled Wednesday Jamaal T. Edwards must be moved to a state forensic mental hospital as soon as possible and receive treatment there until experts declare that he is no longer dangerous.

Schlegel rendered his verdict after weighing about 2,000 pages of evidence and hearing testimony from three mental health professionals.

Court records say Edwards chased Tracy Nguyen down on Aug. 10, 2013, and shot her once in the upper body. Nguyen died at the scene.
