JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Highway Patrol says a motorist is facing multiple charges after the SUV he was driving hit a ditch, went airborne and landed on a car.

Local media outlets report the patrol said the accident occurred on Wednesday between Richlands and Jacksonville.

According to the patrol, 85-year-old Leon Ward Sylvester Jr. of Emerald Isle was driving southbound on N.C. Highway 24 when his SUV landed on top of a car driven by 73-year-old Mattie Andrews, who had stopped at a stop sign. The patrol said Andrews died at the scene.

Sylvester is listed in fair condition in a hospital in Greenville, and the patrol said he is expected to be released soon. Trooper J.D. Kirk said Sylvester has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving.
