GERING, Neb. (AP) - State officials say a conservation officer has killed a mountain lion in a western Nebraska city because it was considered a threat to people.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says the officer shot and killed a 60-pound female cougar late Thursday morning in Gering. Officials say the animal was killed after it was reported in a residential area of the city.

The commission says its protocol is to kill mountain lions found in municipalities.
