NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Police say a woman who went to the window of her New Haven home to investigate when she heard men arguing outside was accidentally shot when the confrontation erupted in gunfire.

Officers responding to the city’s automated gunfire detection system at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday found the 59-year-old victim suffering from a wound to the chest. She was alert and able to speak with police. She suffered what police called a surface wound and is expected to recover.

The woman said she saw three men involved. Police searched the area but did not find anyone.

They did find 12 spent shell casings indicating that shots were fired from more than one gun. One car was also struck.

The woman’s name was not disclosed.
