PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) - The Hawaii Police Department says one of its officers shot and killed a man in Puna.

Officers responded Thursday to a call reporting a man possibly armed with a weapon in Hawaiian Paradise Park.

Police say two officers approached a man sitting in a pickup truck and then began struggling with him. Police say that while they were struggling, the man pointed a handgun at one of the officers.

One of the officers fired his gun and killed the man. That officer has been with the department for nine years. The other officer was taken to Hilo Medical Center with minor injuries.

Police on Friday identified the man as 36-year-old BJ Medeiros of Keaau.

The department is conducting criminal and professional standards investigations, which are normal procedures after police-involved shootings.
