REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell has signed legislation establishing dedicated funding for Delaware’s waterway management operations.

Markell signed the bill Friday at the Indian River Marine at Delaware Seashore State Park. The legislation puts increased revenue from boat registrations to the new Waterway Management Fund.

Natural resources officials said in a news release that fishing is key to state and local economies, but boaters have difficulty in navigating the state’s waterways.

Officials say the problems are caused by silt and sediment buildup along main channels. The new fund will help pay for dredging and channel marking.
