BENSON, Ariz. (AP) - Federal officials have suspended a permit for a 28,000-home master-planned community in Benson.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers suspended the projects Clean Water Act permit in a Wednesday letter to Villages at Vigneto’s developer, El Dorado Holdings LLC, in order to further investigate the project’s potential impacts on wildlife in the San Pedro River valley.

El Dorado Development Partner Mike Reinbold says he supports the Corps’ effort to comply with environmental regulations and that he does not expect the suspension to cause significant delays.

The project has faced strong opposition from conservation groups that are concerned about its impact on the San Pedro River and the wildlife around it.
