LAUREL, Miss. (AP) - The Laurel City Council has granted a tax exemption for poultry producer and processor Wayne Farms after months of waiting.

WDAM-TV (https://bit.ly/29WPAwb ) reports the city voted 5-2 Tuesday to grant Wayne Farms the exemption for five years in the amount of just under $6 million.

The council had delayed the vote a few weeks ago after the company asked for a $9 million tax break over 10 years.

Throughout the meeting, Mayor Johnny Magee referenced the nearly 600 employees that the company had laid off this year. He said he would have preferred Wayne Farms returning in five years to reapply for the exemption, after showing they’ve put more people back to work.

Wayne Farms representatives in the meeting referenced the more than 400 people who are still employed there.
