SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) - A new three-star general is taking command of U.S. Air Force units in a 20-nation area of the Mideast and southwest Asia.

Air Force Senior Airman Monica Ricci says Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian takes over from Lt. Gen. Charles Brown Jr. Friday at 10 a.m. The event is scheduled to be held at Shaw Air Force Base and is not open to the general public.

U.S. Central Command head Army Gen. Joseph L. Votel is hosting the transfer.

Harrigian takes charge of air operations and contingency planning for U.S. air combat forces in the region that stretches from Egypt to Pakistan.

Besides its headquarters at Shaw Air Force Base outside Sumter, there is a command center as well at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
