DENVER (AP) - A man has been sentenced to 36 years in prison for stabbing his girlfriend to death at a Lakewood motel.

The Denver Post reports (https://goo.gl/IKFy49 ) 22-year-old Leonard Martinez was sentenced last week for stabbing 20-year-old Kendra Chavez in the neck Feb. 25, 2015. He was convicted in June of second-degree murder.

Police were called after Chavez was attacked and sought help from a neighbor at the Curve Motel.

Chavez’s mother testified that just minutes before the stabbing, her daughter had called her and she could tell from her voice that she was afraid.

Prosecutors say Martinez had a history of domestic violence against Chavez, who he had dated off and on since high school.
