WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - A man who stabbed a teenager in the heart while stealing his backpack on a Yonkers street faces prison after pleading guilty to felony charges.

Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty says Michael Thomas of Yonkers, also known as Laquan Smith, will be sentenced Aug. 31. He could get up to 25 years behind bars.

The 19-year-old victim of the July 2015 mugging had no pulse when he arrived at the hospital. He was revived and underwent heart surgery.

The prosecutor says that minutes before that attack, the defendant had tried to rob another person at knifepoint.
