ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York officials say new ventilation requirements intended to protect nail salon workers and customers will take effect Oct. 3 for salons seeking licenses.

They will be required to meet the standards set by the 2015 International Mechanical Code.

Those requirements include supplying sufficient fresh outdoor air to remove chemicals, vapors, fumes, dust and other air contaminants from the salon, which are to be vented outdoors.

The code also requires specific exhaust inlets at each manicure and pedicure work station.

Salons licensed before Oct. 3 will have an additional five years to comply with the code.
