PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) - Port Angeles police say they are investigating a reported assault as a hate crime after an assailant shouted racial slurs as he attacked the victim.

The Peninsula Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/2a19q8c ) that police say the victim has been treated at a hospital for the contusions and abrasions he suffered during the early Sunday attack.

Police say the victim had been walking to a friend’s house when a group of about six people got out of three vehicles and confronted him.

Sgt. Jason Viada says the behavior of the one person from the group who beat the victim makes the case racially motivated.

Viada declined to comment Thursday on whether there are suspects or persons of interest in the assault, other than to say “we have people we have to interview.”
